It is great to see some better riding weather! It sure looks like many of you have been putting in some HOG miles. We have a new simplified form for recording your Ride 365 miles. The new form is available on the web site in the same place as the old one, and it is fillable using a computer.

https://www.eshog.com/blog/ride-365

On this new form there is a place for recording passenger miles. There are two simple rules to follow when recording passenger miles:

1. Each chapter member can either record HOG miles for the bikes they own, or passenger miles, but not both.

2. Each member recording passenger miles needs to keep a journal of the miles recorded.

This should help us with our Ride 365 target, but it doesn't give us any advantage over GNW HOG as they have the same form. So keep on riding and recording those miles!

Having Patch Lady Diane at the February meeting was a great success, so we will endeavor to book her to be at future meetings also.

I hope to see you all at the dealership event on April 8th, the Nine Line Easter Service Veteran Ride.

Our sister HOG chapter (GNWHOG)  Officially took up the Ride 365 challenge by announcing their goal of 350,000 miles for 2023, which matches our Ride 365 goal. We support this friendly rivalry and it will encourage us all to get out and ride.

The HOG Mileage Program form is available for download from our website and there are paper forms at the dealership.

https://www.eshog.com/blog/ride-365

We really want to keep the momentum going from last year. So please TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR CURRENT MILEAGE AND VIN (if your vin is not on your form) and bring it into the dealership when you can! That picture counts as the start when you fill out the normal form!

April Destination:
Black Diamond Museum!

32627 Railroad Ave, Black Diamond, WA 98010

Beginning in the 1880s Black Diamond was a rural coal mining area, developed by the Black Diamond Coal Mining Company of California. After World War I, the town shut down the mine. However, a second mining boom spurred growth in the town in the early 1930s.

The main building of the Black Diamond Historical Museum is the former train station, which served the Columbia & Puget Sound Railway 1884–1916 and the Pacific Coast Railway 1916–1951.

Get a pic of yourself, your bike, and The Black Diamond Museum in the background for a chance at a $25 gift card at our upcoming chapter meeting! Send it to [email protected] or post it on our ES Roadhog Facebook page! You have from now through April 28th to complete this destination.

We finished off the month with a good discussion on group riding best practices. I encourage anyone to ask questions of me or any Road Captain at ESHOG regarding group riding!

ESHOG had a significantly strong participation month with 35 riders going to the March D by Lake Stevens! That's fantastic! Getting out and riding is fun and there are a lot of riders on track to do 10 of 12 monthly D's for a chance to win $50!

At the meeting, I also mentioned a $50 raffle I'm putting together for all who ride to Zilla, WA for the '10 of 23 HD destination - the Tea Pot Service Station. I'm hoping MANY of you can get that ride destination done as there are fun ways to get there and back.

Jason R. - I’ve been riding for just over 10 years consecutively with some on off periods before that time.  This was my second Harley-Davidson and just got another to add with the Pan-America. Looking forward to meeting with y’all! Been riding with Tony for a few years and we just reconnected.

Thank You All, Lanelle B.

Bike Blessing
by Eric Olsen

Last weekend there was a Blessing of Bikes at both our own Eastside Harley Davidson and Emerald City where many Black Sheep and CMA riders have the opportunity to sponsor and serve our motorcycle community. I wanted to take a few minutes to look at where this idea started, what it is today, and how being a blessing is a universal part of any community.

From my research, the Blessing of Bikes started in the third weekend in May, 1972 by Rev. Fr. Dave Hawley, a priest at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Baldwin, Michigan. Father Dave was community minded and created services for seniors, which formed into St. Ann Senior Center that runs to this day. The historical account stated “Father Dave worked with a motorcycle group from Grand Rapids (Para-Dice Motorcycle Club) to begin Blessing of the Bikes.”

With the first Blessing of the Bikes inaugurated in 1972, eight riders and four motorcycles met at St. Ann’s church - the celebration’s main purpose to offer a blessing for a safe riding season for bikers. Proceeds from the annual event went to St. Ann’s outreaches for seniors, which continued through Hawley’s time at St. Ann’s to the priest who succeeded him, Ray Bruck in 1979, and decades beyond.

The festival became better known and bigger through the years, and continues to draw big crowds to Baldwin, from all over. Lake County Chamber of Commerce is the No. 1 promoter and supporter of the festival, and works hard with Para-Dice Motorcycle Club, the village of Baldwin, Lake County Sheriff's Office, fire departments, Michigan DOT, and many other groups to make the event a continual success, according to the LCCC website.

In recent years, proceeds at the gate now benefit Duane E. Dewey AMVETS Post 1988 in support of veterans.

As of last night, the event’s Facebook page had 1.1K going and 4.5K interested in this year. We will likely have significantly less folks, locally, rolling through the 2 dealerships today. However, everyone who does will receive a prayer of blessing for a safe riding season and any other requests that may be made known. We are NOT doing this as a fundraiser, so no donations are accepted. But we ARE doing this as an honored tradition in the biker world and to unite with our community in a special way. As people of faith, we are honored every time we have the chance to pray for any one of our family.

Dictionary.com lists a couple of different definitions for the word blessing that are applicable to what we are doing.

  • a favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness.
  • the invoking of God's favor upon a person

Our HOG community contains many different people with varying backgrounds and life stories. But we come together over what we have in common, our love of riding. And in our community, we take care of each other by having safety directors, leads, sweeps, classes, and other activities to benefit those in our community. There are gifted and generous people that give to our community by being on the board, and putting together great events that strengthen and grow our family. And when people in our group have a rough patch, as life seems to deal out on occasion, we bless each other with kindness and support.

Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Today, I encourage each of you to make a point of offering your own blessing to another person. It might be here in our HOG group, or somewhere else, but try to do a little something to refresh others as the scripture says. You will find that it will be mutually beneficial and a great daily principle to live by.

Buzz Harrington...

Memorial Service

For a few of you who know Buzz and Darleen Harrington. Buzz passed away this past week, and there is a memorial service on April 22nd, at the Faith Church Building in Snohomish located at 1220 22nd Street at 2pm. Buzz and his wife Darleen were members of NCHOG and were instrumental in helping me (Your Editor) get started with HOG 20 years ago. God Speed Buzz, as you ride the winds my old friend.

FROM NCHOG:
It is with heavy heart that I write to tell you that God called our friend Terry Berglund home today (3-28-23). He went down while negotiating a curve on a ride this afternoon, when he hit a guard rail. He passed away an hour later at the hospital with his wife Sue at his side. Please keep them all in your prayers.
