Last year we exceeded our Ride 365 target convincingly by more than 50,000 miles. Well done everyone!! Please ensure that you get your first odometer reading for 2024 registered so that we can capture all your riding miles. Mileage forms are available in paper form at the dealership or a fillable form is available online from our website:

Welcome to our two new board members for 2024, Jason “Griff” G. as Head Road Captain, and Dave H. as Safety Officer, who have already been quite involved in planning.

As winter weather hit the Pacific Northwest with a vengeance, it's important to take extra precautions to ensure a safe ride. Freezing temperatures and slick roads can make riding more challenging, but with the right gear and preparation, you can still enjoy the open road. We hope chapter members have been able to take advantage of the better weather days to get out and ride.


It's important to dress in layers to stay warm and dry, and to invest in quality gear that is specifically designed for cold weather riding. Make sure you have good visibility by wearing reflective clothing and ensuring your bike's lights are in good working order. And don't forget to check the road conditions before heading out, and adjust your riding style accordingly.


Despite the challenges of winter riding, it can be an exhilarating experience. The crisp air and beautiful scenery make for a unique and memorable ride. So don't let the weather stop you from enjoying your motorcycle. With the right preparation and mindset, you can ride safely and confidently all year 'round.

Swing by the dealership and get your mileage read for the new Ride 365 program. You can also download the form on Eshog.com website, print it out and mail it in. We do need to have a hard copy with your signature on file for Harley-Davidson. This is a requirement to have a new updated form every year. Most of you know by now, but we have a lot of new members.


Everyone needs to complete a new Membership Form. Our chapter must obtain a current Chapter Membership Enrollment form from you to maintain your active status in our Chapter. Your national membership must be current prior to sending in your form. If you are not sure when your membership expires, or can't remember your National Member ID, you can log into the National HOG site to obtain it. SIGN the Membership Form (can't be electronic signature, must be hand signed original) Please complete the form, bring it with you or mail your form to the dealership at: Eastside HOG, C/O Eastside Harley Davidson, 2350 136th PL NE Bellevue, WA 98005 OR drop the form at the Dealership in our drop box on the East wall in our membership corner next to the bulletin board. FEBRUARY
TAKE THE CHALLANGE


The  February challange to the Troll is a mixed media colossal statue, located on N. 36th Street at Troll Avenue N., under the north end of the George Washington Memorial Bridge (also known as the Aurora Bridge). The Troll was a collaborative effort of several local artists 1990. It is clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle, as if it had just swiped it from the roadway above.


The vehicle has a California license plate. Originally, the car held a time capsule, including a plaster bust of Elvis Presley, which was stolen when the sculpture was vandalized.The Troll is 18 ft (5.5 m) high, weighs 13,000 lb (5,900 kg), and is made of steel rebar, wire, and concrete.

A New Hope ...
I admit it, my inner nerd is showing again.

But considering the topic, I couldn’t resist the urge to plagiarize Lucas.  No, I’m not really talking about a galaxy far, far away. Nor am I channeling my inner Jedi, or C3PO or R2D2. Not referencing The New Hope for the Empire, and I’m certainly not here to represent Darth Vader or any other Sith Lord.


I’m talking about the kind of hope that we stumble into at the beginning of a new year. 2023 is over (thank you Jesus!), and 2024 hasn’t quite been ruined. Yet.

I love the month of January and the new year. Even though January 1st is just another date on the calendar, there’s something refreshing and exciting about starting a new year. The slate is clean. The things of the previous year belong to the previous year. Meanwhile, we have the opportunity to set a new course for a new year. Not necessarily “New Years Resolutions”. Just a fresh start. Maybe a fresh way of thinking. A more hopeful mindset. For me, a good portion of 2023 wasn’t a whole lot of fun. Medical issues, layoff from my longest job position, health concerns for family members and friends. But the new year is here, and I am determined to make sure that 2024 is not a repeat – if only in my perspective. My frame of mind. My attitude. These are the things that are in my control.

To be honest, only four days into the New Year, my stepdad Bruce passed away. Kinda seemed like 2023 just wasn’t going to let go. This was not at all a surprise. While heartbreaking, it was expected – and in some ways a relief. But this loss is not going to overshadow the entire year. I started a new job on January 15th. I have some opportunities headed my way, as I am sure all of us do. So, for me I choose to embrace 2024 with an attitude and mindset of Hope. A New Hope for a New Year. I believe that this is exactly what the Old Testament Prophet Isaiah was teaching us: Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness, and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43: 18-19


I do not find my hope in the systems of the world. Not in the government. Not in riches and possessions. Not even in people – and especially the political class. For me, the only hope that I can be confident in is the Hope that I have in God. And that always brings me peace, no matter the circumstances. As St. Paul scribed in his letter to the Philippians: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”Phil 4: 6-8

 

Don’t be anxious. Instead, let’s embrace the New Year with New Hope. Look not to a Galaxy Far, Far Away. The Empire you’re looking for is right before you.

After my personal dose of pancratic cancer, and 35 years with the fire department, your editor understand the importance of our time. Being on scene with many people in their last few moments on earth, there never seemed to be enough time.
